Diwali is the biggest festival of the hindus. It is the country's most popular festival. It is observed by all citizens of the country. Diwali usually falls in the month of october or november.
Diwali is a festival of lights. It is celebrated by all with tremendous excitement and fervour. The festival's preparations begin months in advance. People clean and white-wash their houses. They buy new clothes. Children buy crackers. Women prepare sweets and other special Diwali delicacies. Greeting cards are sent to family and friends.
Women create colourful and stunning rangoli creations on Diwali. Festoons made of marigold flowers and Ashoka tree leaves are used to decorate the entrances. At night, there are rows of earthen lamps at every house. Children burst crackers. On this day businessmen perform the 'Chopda Poojan'. Every store is festooned with bright lights and festoons.
The New Year is also celebrated the next day with great joy. People get up very early on that day. They wear new clothes and go to the temples. They visit their friends and relatives and they wish one another a happy new year.
